Comparison of Farrocement Doors & Windows with Steel and Wood
(Syndicate No.5)

AIM
Strength and cost comparison of ferrocement door and window shutters with that of wood and steel.

SCOPE

With rapid advancement in construction industry the development of cheaper & stronger alternatives of various housing components has emerged as need. One of the avenues in this respect is the components made of ferrocement. Door and window shutters made of ferrocement are anticipated to possess higher degree of toughness, ductility & durability in comparison to conventional wood & steel. The project is intended to develop door & window shutters of ferrocement, a highly versatile form of composite material made of cement mortar & layers of wire mesh closely bound together to create a stiff structural form, and their strength compared to that of wood and steel .A cost analysis will also be carried out to check cheaper alternative.

METHODOLGY

Following methodology was adopted for the execution of the project:
* Thorough understanding of ferrocement
* Selection of suitable materials
* Casting of ferrocement doors & windows
* Curing
* Analysis of strength
* Comparison of their strength with wooden & steel doors and windows
* Cost comparison
* Final recommendations

CONCLUSIONS
Ferrocement doors and windows turned out to be stronger than wooden but their strength was unable to match that of steel doors and windows. As far as economy was concerned ferrocement doors and windows were the cheapest of all.
